Top 5 Book Parents/Parental Figures

My first thought about this week was how hard it was going to be coming up with 5 parents. As a reader of a lot of YA, there is generally a lack of parents in the books I read. But than I had a good think and found way more than 5 I love. So here's my tops.

5. Nathan and Andy Nolan from
Lola's dads are fantastic. First off I love that Perkins was not afraid to show diversity in her books. How many YA books have gay parents in them? Yea, I can't come up with any either. Both of them are beyond loving and let Lola be Lola. She's quirky and different. But they embrace all those quirks. And they are both involved but not overly so. There's rules and they just don't want to see her be hurt by her jerkface of a boyfriend. But they know it's not their decision to make. Lola has to see for herself and figure out her life.

4. Michael Merrick from
Oh my poor Michael. He's only 23 and raising his 3 younger brothers. And if for some reason you haven't started this series(why haven't you?!), that's not easy work. He's trying to provide a stable household for them. He's running his families landscape company. He had to deal with growing up at a very young age. As soon as he lost his parents he knew there was no way he was giving up his brothers. He has that "dad" attitude when he needs to, but he also acts like an older brother. Obviously they all fight(there's a lot of testosterone in the house) but Chris, Nick and Gabriel do respect him and seem to understand what he's had to give up to keep their family together.

3. Charlotte and Henry Branwell from
Like Michael, Charlotte and Henry are young. But as heads of the London institute they end up becoming parents to a orphaned children. And well Will can be a major handful, so huge props to them for taking him on. I know they didn't really have a choice to look after these kids. But they have a choice in how involved they become in their lives. And I think they've chosen the right amount of involvement, attitude and love. Henry is Henry and doesn't really pay attention to what goes on around him. But Charlotte sets rules and discipline as well as letting them live their own lives like the young adults they are.

2. Dumbledore
I don't really think my next two will need much explanation but as much as Dumbledore was there for Harry and I think truly loved him. I also feel that any of the students could have come to him for anything and he would have offered them solutions in his Dumbledore way. Which ultimately lets the student come to their own decision.

1. Mr.and Mrs. Weasley
I want to be a Weasley!

  4. Oooooh I wanted to be a Weasley so badly! The family is so awesome, Molly and Arthur are the bees knees, and the Burrow is so cozy. I'd love to be a Weasley. But then I'd be hitting on all the guys there so maybe it's best if I'd be married into the fam :P
