Some men are just better when they're bold.

Welcome to the Point...

In a dark and broken kingdom, a ruler has to be fearless to control the streets and the ruthless people who run them.

Race Hartman is just bold enough, just smart enough, and just lost enough to wear the crown. Places like the Point will always have bad things and bad people, but the man in control of all that badness can minimize the devastation. Race has a plan, but can he prevent total annihilation without destroying himself?

Brysen Carter has always seen her best friend's brother for what he is--too pretty, too smooth, and way too dangerous to touch. Basking in Race's golden glow is very tempting, but Brysen knows she'd eventually get burned.

When she starts receiving threatening texts and someone tries to take her out in parking lot, the only person interested in keeping her safe is the one man she can't allow herself to have.

Sometimes being bold is the only way to stay alive. But can she let Race save her life . . . if it means losing herself to him?

It is far from a secret that I absolutely am obsessed with Jay's books. She has this way of pulling me in to the lives of characters that are very different from my own. You've got very intense and tough guys and their ladies, who are sassy and can hold their own in any situation. Just very complex characters. With the added bonus of a whole lot of heat. Cold showers are a necessity.

Seeing as Better When He's Bold is the second book in this trilogy, we got to meet Race and Brysen briefly in Better When He's Bad. As well as getting to know The Point. I live in a pretty safe suburb. So for me, The Point is scary as hell. Jay sure knows how to paint this gritty, tough rundown town. Crime and general shadiness run rampant. Its a place where outsiders try their best to stay away and the residents run it. The Point is easily one of the main characters in these books. Because everything that happens to the characters correlates with living in The Point. If you're looking to journey onto the wrong side of the tracks, than you've found it here.

So Race was this extremely mysterious character in Bad. He's Dovie's brother and Bax's best friend. Dovie and Bax spent most of Bad trying to find Race as he was kicking up a lot of shit. And I mean a lot of shit. Which lead him to become King of The Point. He's running it. From seeing that this guy did everything he can to get where he is now, I felt like I had a pretty solid impression on the type of character Race was going to be. But he ended up surprising me. He's absolutely hard and dark, with an alpha male complex. Of course. But there is so much more to Race. His ulterior motives for wanting to run The Point are actually quite refreshing. Race wants to change how things are done. He's not stupid, he knows The Point will always be raw and full of everything illegal. But it's more that the way things were going down before, with absolutely no care for human life and decency, Race wants to see change for the better. It's weird to say it like that. Race just wants things to run smoothly and he's willing to do it unorthodox ways. Which unfortunately means constant threats against his life. He won't even carry a gun, which for his position seems just dumb. Race was just different than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, he's scary and raw. And could certainly do some damage if need be. But he's also extremely intelligent, cunning and should just how much he can care and feel. Like I said, complex and intense.

Brysen had no problem shaking Race's world up. Jay's ladies always have this way of slamming into these guys lives at just the right moment. Brysen is a strong and independent lady with a bunch of crap on her plate. Brysen is from The Hill. A very different atmosphere than The Point. On the outside it might seem like she's a normal college student. But she's not. Brysen is practically raising her teenage sister well her mom drugs herself into oblivion and her dad pretends that his work is his family. Brysen is working to keep herself and sister a float well being a full time student. She doesn't get to have fun and a life. But she can't help imaging how in a few years when her sister is off at college, she can finally begin to live again. Unfortunately that doesn't end there for Brysen. Someone is out to get her. She's gotten herself a stalker. A very nasty one, that seems to want her life. You feel for the girl. But being the strong women Brysen is that doesn't slow her down. She has no problem confronting any situation that gets in her way. Race tries his hardest to get in her way, boss her around a little. She's just having none of that. Brysen has a brilliant emotionless face. It's unfortunate that she needs to show it more often than not. That also helped me really like her. Brysen is sassy and don't put up with no shit. It's all about the future for her. I loved her relationship with her sister. It's great that Jay is always on top of showing strong family relationships(she's always good at showing the other side of them too). Her sister helped with Brysen not coming off as a complete cold witch. Brysen definitely is not weak and shows Race exactly how much she can handle in his world. And considering his lifestyle would keep 99% of women away, I say she's pretty damn kick-ass.

Brysen was crushing on Race from afar knowing that was not going to be acting on those feelings. No way was she going to get involved with a guy like, Race. But as we know those damn feelings always have something else in store. And for Race it was no question. He was attracted to Brysen and he flat out told her, it's going to happen. And it's going to be real good when it does. Which did exactly what Race wanted, he got under Brysen's skin. It gets hot and doesn't really cool down. Which thank you, love when I have to give myself a little fanning. But I loved how Race was like I'm gonna be here for you, I'm going to take care of you and you're going to let me. And Brysen was like well I'm going to call you out on your shit, I'm not going to get scared of your life and I'm going to make my own life well doing it. They complimented each other so well. What I also appreciated, so much, about their relationship is that there was no falling out. They got together, fought a little, disagreed a little more, but when the big conflict of the story came along they just worked through it. I found it quite refreshing because a lot of romance novels follow the same formula.

If you have not found your way to The Point and the guys and ladies there than you are definitely missing out. Better When He's Bold is as far from a fluffy romance as you can get(none of Jay's books are). It's so visceral and raw. No way do I want to venture there. I'll just keep it to the pages. But I wouldn't turn away Race if he showed up at my door step. So pumped for the last book in this fantastically sexy trilogy.
