Top Ten Tuesday: Characters Everyone Loves But I Want to Throat Punch

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme held by The Broke and the Bookish.

This weeks topic is: Top ten characters everyone loves but I definitely do not.

I have a very strong opinion about a lot of popular characters. I can guarantee there will be a lot of strong words used in the next few sentences to tell you why I do not like these characters.

Jace from The Mortal Instruments: What an asshole. He's cocky, self absorbed and gives absolutely no thought for anyone except himself. He thinks his sad past is more depressing than anyone else's could be, thus his past and making his future right is all that matters. Extremely unattractive in every way.
Clary from The Mortal Instruments: The idiot. I've yet to come across another character that continually makes the stupid and wrong decision in every situation. She absolutely never learns from her mistakes. She's super selfish. And the worst friend in the world. How Simon is still her friend is just beyond me.
Hardin from After: Dirt of the earth. He is the worst character I have ever come across. Absolutely disgusting. He abuses people in every sense of the word. I cannot fathom how readers feel anything positive towards him. If this was real life he would rot in jail for life.
Tessa from After: Judgmental, whiny bitch. I can't even. Honestly, her and Hardin deserve each other. They are both terrible terrible people.
Jason from The Heroes of Olympus series: I don't hate him, he's just useless. He's supposed to be a powerful demigod but spends the whole series getting in the way and getting himself hurt. What is his point?
Aelin from Queen of Shadows: This still hurts my heart, as Celaena is one of my most favourite characters. But all trace of that character is gone come Queen of Shadows. She is truly Aelin; a fire breathing bitch queen. She's rude, selfish and secretive. I miss Celaena soooo much. I hate you, Aelin.
Maxon from The Selection series: I do not get the attraction here. To be fair I don't like this series or any character in it. But Maxon is not a prince to fall for. He is the cowardly lion. His jealous, immaturity and rash decisions will get his future kingdom destroyed. If you're looking for a Prince Harry than look elsewhere.
Willow Dean from Dumplin': For a book that is supposed to be all about body positivity and a fat girl that is comfortable in her skin I did not get that for the most part. She judges EVERYBODY. Her thoughts and comments are just rude. She fat shames, she shames skinnier girls. Nope, very little positive about Willow Dean.
Zayne from The Dark Elements Series: Here's a case of that's mine. Zayne was fine in the first book. The second book is where it went down hill when he was brought into the mix of being Layla's love interest. I like myself a best friend to love story, except here. The only reason Zayne decided he had feelings for Layla is because she finally was moving on from crushing on him. He turned into a down right douchebag and despicable friend.
Mal from The Grisha Trilogy: Ugh. I mean I call him fuckface, so that should speak volumes. He's another character that let's his immature jealously rule him. Alina is a kick ass lady, but way to leave your best friend worrying about you when she's supposed to be saving the world. You are a shitty friend, Mal who is envious of her strength, when you are so very weak in many ways. I'm sure you can guess how I felt about the end of R&R.

  1. Clary made some of the dumbest decisions ever - over and over again. At least Jace has a sense of humor - otherwise he would be completely unbearable!

    1. Clary is dumb. If that series lost Jace and Clary it would be a million times better.

  2. Totally with you on Maxon! I just don't get the attraction! :-)

    1. It's head scratching. What even? He's so lame.

  3. OOOH! I LOVE AELIN! I think she's still Celaena, but just more grown up, and a QUEEN! No comments on Maxon, because I read the entire series in one night, and I still have no coherent thoughts!

Have a lovely week! New follower!

    1. I know I'm in the minority with Aelin. But I cannot stand behind her terrible attitude and her treatment towards people that supposed to be her friends.
I don't understand the appeal of The Selection series. It's not even fluff. It's just UGH.
      Thanks Aditi!

  4. I liked Jace for his humor. A lot of the characters in that book aren't very likable. Simon and Magnus are my favorites.
GAH! Zayne, I did not like his character at all. I liked him less when he decided he was "in love" with Layla. It was so out of the blue and really did come across that he pushed deeper feelings because of Roth.
I don't know of anyone who actually loves any of the characters from The Selection series. I was so frustrated with those characters, that when I heard she was writing more books, the idea of reading a repeat with their daughter made me cringe. He's on my list, but mostly because I was running out of characters to think of that other people might like that I didn't.

    1. I love Simon and Magnus. Malec is life. I do agree that there's a lot of unlikable characters in that series.
Zayne only wanted her because it was a challenge. It was totally despicable on his part.
See I know of so many people that love The Selection series and especially Maxon. I know they get frustrated with America. But still love the series. It flabbergasts me. Everything about it is terrible. And like you I will never read the spin-off because gross.

  5. DUDE. OMG. YOU AND ME BOUT ABOUT AELIN. *flails with you* I literally despise her now, which breaks my heart, because the first two books were my FAVOURITE. But where did Celanea even go??? The girl who cared about her friends and would fight for them?! Aelin is horrible and selfish and the series is forever ruined for me. *weeps*
I also can't stand Mal. D: TEAM NIKOLAI FOREVER.

    1. Celaena is dead. And I hate Maas for that. How could you destroy her and think we'd be okay with the despicable Aelin? I agree; the series is ruined. My favourite series. My SHIP! It's all gone. And I'm still not over it. *weeps with you*
      Yes! #TEAMNIKOLAI He is perfection.

  6. I haven't read any of these! I've been borderline on Dumplin' because I've been suspicious of Willow Deen. She sounded judge-y. All of these books are on my TBR so I'm curious if I will dislike them as strongly.

    1. She is super judge-y. Nothing passes her by with a comment. I don't get how the book is marketed as body positive and feeling comfortable in your own skin. Nope! Not even close.

  7. Poor Mal! He really is getting a ton of hate today :p

  8. Oh my god. Excuse me while I die of laughter. Your descriptions are so funny that I'm actually dying. "I call him fuckface" HAHAHA. That's actually the best. I'd love to do more than throat punch Hardin. Aelin deserves a good throat punch. Maybe it'll knock some sense back into her and she'll stop acting all high and mighty. The only one I don't agree with is Maxon because I loooooove him!

    Great list Brittany!

  9. OMG I am sitting here howling (and my boss probably thinks I'm insane). LOL Your commentary is priceless. I get where you're coming from with Jace but even so... I can't help it. I like him. I love his cockiness, his snarkiness. Now Clary I'm totally with you. Holy shit, Little Miss Know It All worked my last nerve thru all six books. She gets introduced to the Shadowhunter world and immediately thinks she knows it all and can handle anything on her own with no help from anyone. I constantly wanted to see her taken down a notch (or twelve) but no - Clary always saved the day. Gag. Tessa was a Mary Sue that I constantly wanted to slap. Hard. And then slap her for making my hand hurt. (And yet I read all 4 books. I couldn't help myself. It was like watching a car crash and I couldn't look away.) I'm iffy on Zayne. I didn't love him but then I felt sorry for him but no matter what I knew Layla belonged with Roth. I never disliked Zayne... I just knew I didn't want him to be endgame. Awesome post, Brittany!
