When the Princess of Nova accidentally poisons herself with a love potion meant for her crush, she falls crown-over-heels in love with her own reflection. Oops. A nationwide hunt is called to find the cure, with competitors travelling the world for the rarest ingredients, deep in magical forests and frozen tundras, facing death at every turn.

Enter Samantha Kemi - an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Sam's family were once the most respected alchemists in the kingdom, but they've fallen on hard times, and winning the hunt would save their reputation. But can Sam really compete with the dazzling powers of the ZoroAster megapharma company? Just how close is Sam willing to get to Zain Aster, her dashing former classmate and enemy, in the meantime?

And just to add to the pressure, this quest is ALL OVER social media. And the world news.

No big deal, then.

Now here's the thing, Madly turned out to be a really good time. I'm really not sure what I was expecting. I just remember reading something about a kingdom and a love potion and thought to myself I should request this book from the publisher. And I'm really glad I did. Madly was the perfect read at the perfect time. I needed something quick and fun and it so happened that Madly checked those things off easily.

Samantha's family runs one of the oldest alchemist shops in the kingdom. But these days they have very few customers as technology and the use of synthesized potions have become taken over. With Samantha's younger sister showing the signs of becoming a very strong talented(witch), Samantha being an ordinary, is primed to take over running the families shop. Although Samantha dreams of bringing the shop into the 21st century, her grandfather is set on running it as it has always been run. All seems like the eventual demise of the old way, until the Princess becomes poisoned with a love potion and the court calls The Hunt. An old competition that sees the kingdoms most known alchemists competing in a world wide race to save the sick royal(in this case the Princess). As the love potion being outlawed many a years ago, the competitors must work off their knowledge and instincts to produce the correct potion to save the Princess. Samantha may be an ordinary but she has an extraordinary talent for alchemy and mixing. She joins the hunt to save the Princess but also to prove that the old ways aren't dead and thus save her families shop. Samantha cannot guess what The Hunt will bring; except she knows not letting the Megapharma(and old family rival), ZoroAster win is top of her list.

I really loved the world Alward created; Nova and the rest of the world is purely fantasy, yet set in the 21st century. Magic, alchemy and mythical creatures were all present, but so were T.V.s, cell phones and airplanes. It was a cool mix. As was the comparison's between the different lands and our countries. I laughed at how Nova has a royal court, but also a parliament thus showing the royal court to be more for show than anything else(remind you of a certain bunch of royals?). I just found that the world was something I knew well, but also had a great fantastical element to it.

The Hunt itself turned out to be what you would expect; something akin to The Amazing Race. It saw Samantha leaving her kingdom for the first time to travel the world in search of rare and sometimes dangerous to find ingredients. The Hunt was heavy with competition, obviously, which meant backstabbing and racing to that finish line. Not only was the Princesses life on the line, but so was the kingdoms future and each team wanted the prize.

As seemed to be the running theme with Madly, the characters were super fun too. You've got the ditsy Princess who creates a love potion which she accidentally ingests, thus falling in love with herself. Which provided a bunch of chuckles. Than there's the outcasted King's sister who was set to destroy the competitors of The Hunt so she could take over the kingdom. Being a light book, she's not truly scary, just a good Disney type villain. Samantha's grumpy grandfather, was the character with secrets that he was set on keeping to stop changes to his life. Samantha's loyal best friend, who was more set on seeing Samantha succeed than her own family. Molly, Samantha's younger sister, who just happens to prove herself at the opportune moment. And my favourite, Kirsty, the families Finder(she travels to world to find ingredients for Samantha's family). She's the one who knows the world and get whatever and wherever with her charisma, know how and don't care attitude. There always needs to be a Kirsty.

Samantha was an excellent heroine. Even though she'd not traveled, she never appeared sheltered. Although technically ordinary, her brain and skill at mixing proved magic is far from everything. Samantha turned out to be quite endearing and fearless. She definitely had that "special" aura about her, but for some reason it worked and didn't have me eye rolling. Samantha had a good conscience and used her intelligence to make right decisions, but also the dangerous ones, knowing the pay out would be worth it. Samantha was exactly the type of heroine to fit the story.

Now of course there was romance. But it wasn't the focus, or what was centric to making the plot progress. That fell purely on Samantha's talents. Anyhow, based on how light and fun a story Madly was, guessing the love interest didn't take a rocket scientist. So as it turned out, the son of ZoroAster had a secret crush on Samantha. Zain is of course handsome, popular and charismatic. But was also under the thumb of his overbearing father, so you know, Samantha just happened to be that intriguingly smart and special girl that can help him stop his father. You know how it goes? Like everything else I mentioned, the romance fit with the story. Unlike Zain's father it was not overbearing, just sweet tinged with the awkwardness of being a teen and the distrust Samantha had in Zain's feelings.

Madly was a super quick, light and fun read. It had a full arc and ends as it is a stand alone. I know Goodreads has it listed as the first book, but I'm not sure where Samantha's story could go next. Everything was wrapped up nicely. Although a little cheesy, that's not something I mind so much. A little cheese never hurt anyone. That being said, I wouldn't mind a sequel that sees Samantha taking her new found life forward. I'd look forward to it actually.

Showcase Sunday #89

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme held by Books, Biscuits and Tea. It allows fellow bloggers to show off any books or bookish things they've compiled over the week.

So been a while. How's everyone's start to fall? I'm a summer girl, but there's something about crisp sweater weather that calls to me too.
As some of you were aware I was in Europe these past 10 days. Went to Prague and Vienna. Both are as beautifully stunning as imagined. Although pictures can never do justice. Shameless plug; you can check out my Instragram for said pictures. I love Europe for its history. It's so hard to imagine that buildings I was stepping into were built as early as 900AD. Canada is an infant. We don't have the rich history that you get over there. I love it.
Although it was quite on the blog front for the past two weeks, my book acquiring sure didn't mirror that. The obvious favourite new additions are my Harry Potter purchases. I wanted meaningful souvenirs from my trip and what better than to add to my Harry collection. I was also somehow lucky enough to receive two highly anticipated 2016 releases. Which I will gobble up soon time.

Weekly Wrap-Up September 19th- October 2nd

Well this is a measly wrap-up for a two week period. But I was in Europe, which is as far from a beach vacation as possible. So I didn't have the time to read. But I did get five books read these past two weeks. One was an audio. One an e-ARC. Two were library e-books. And the other a physical ARC. I also had one DNF, which was a ARC.

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling ****
Any celebrity memoir I want to read I always get the audio because I feel it makes it that much better. Mindy is so funny and down to earth. Her stories are very relatable for the average women. We all have the same concerns and hang ups as her. Mindy is just very comfortable in her own body and it's one of the things I love about her. My favourite bits were her stories and facts about her relationship with B.J. Novak. The only reason I can't give this a 5* is because I feel like the stories are all over the place. There's no flow or rhythm. But they're still wonderful nonetheless.

Focus on Me(Focus #2) by Megan Erickson ***.5
Not much to say here. Definitely a cute M/M romance. I was surprised that the story took such a turn with one of the characters depression. But it was handled really well. The road trip aspect was fun, like they always are. The insta-love was super insta and a bit off putting. But otherwise I've been enjoying Erickson's books these past few months.

Forever With You(Wait For You #5) by Jennifer L Armentrout ****
It's a wonderful life when your favourite author pretty much publishes a book a month. My queen. No secret I love this NA series. Forever With You perhaps didn't totally live up to expectations, doesn't mean I didn't blaze through it. Steph is an awesome lady. Close to my favourite of JLA's leading ladies. She's sassy with no filter. She likes sex and isn't scared of what people with think. Nick was a dick. And even though he had some redeeming moments he was never going to live up to Jax or Cam(which I know is near impossible). Unfortunately the story and their relationship was missing that spark. From the get go I guessed where the plot was going to go. Which is unfortunate. Their relationship was hot at times it just wasn't all consuming and swoony. The ending with a certain wedding definitely had me tearing up a bit.

Madly(Potion #1) by Amy Alward ****
Review to come next week.

Winter Wonderland(Minnesota Christmas #3) by Heidi Cullinan **.5
As I have not so quietly been mentioning, Carry the Ocean is a new favourite of mine. So when this popped up on Netgalley I snatched it up. Unfortunately Winter Wonderland is no where close to being in the same league as Carry the Ocean. It was a sweet and tender M/M romance with that whole snowy, Christmas like setting. The characters feel really flat. Both Kyle and Paul were really weak. I expected more from how their personalities were shown to be. But what pissed me off was all the side characters, they're such freakin' busy bodies. Kyle and Paul don't really seem to keep their relationship private, which didn't help. Is this a small town thing? Like everyone is right up in their business. I'm talking all the details. And even dictating how their relationship should go. Ummm... right. That was too annoying for me to find even remotely funny. But no fear, this miss hasn't thrown me off of reading all of Cullinan's books.

The Scorpion Rules(Prisoners of Peace #1) by Erin Bow: DNF @ page 99
There was just too much holding me back from enjoying this book. The world building is super confusing. Actually I'd say there's really a lack of world building. This is some dystopian world and all I can gather is that the world is constantly at war. Some country/state seems to always be on the brink of declaring war on its neighbour. And for some reason these kids of the heads of states are sent away and will be killed if their state goes to war. So that's supposed to be the prevention. Which clearly it isn't. Who cares if your child dies? Not these people. And I don't even know the reason behind it because in 100 pages nothing is flushed out or explained. Being a 100 pages in and not understanding even a little bit of the world is not alright.
Add in that the MC is smart and obedient until the new, intriguing and rebel like boy shows up and I already know where this one is going. Absolutely nothing new with that plot point.
The icing on the cake was spending a whole chapter on goats mating. Really? That's how we're going to progress the plot? Nope. What that made me do is close the book and know I'll never open it again.

**As my Instagram has been busy the last few weeks, I figured I'd just pick some of the photos from my travels and all the book ones. Feel free to check out my account to see all of the ones from Prague**

EXCERPT:

I spotted Roxy and her blue glasses toward the back of the busy restaurant. The walkways between the booths were crowded with racing kids covered in sticky jelly and older people trying to rein them in as I made my way toward them.

Roxy’s hair was pulled up in a messy bun and her eyes squinted as she glanced up at me. “You seriously went running before you came here. You weren’t lying.”

“Nope. I try to run every day.” I sat beside Katie, who compared to Friday night was dressed down in a baby blue off-the-shoulder sweater that looked like sequins had thrown up on it. Her blond hair was pulled back in a low ponytail at the nape of her neck. “I have to work out,” I explained, placing my purse between Katie and me. “I eat like five starving guys in college. It’s actually embarrassing how much food I can consume in one sitting.”

Katie laughed. “I don’t have that problem. I can eat whatever I want and not gain a pound. Actually, I’d probably lose weight.” Her shoulders rose in a shrug. “Sucks to be you all.”

Roxy scowled at her. “You don’t need to rub it in, you know.”

“Don’t hate me because I was born this way.” Katie grinned when Roxy rolled her eyes. “Maybe it’s Maybelline. Maybe it’s Katie.”

I giggle snorted.

The waitress appeared at our table, clicking the pen she’d pulled out of the pocket of her apron. She took our drink order and then dashed off to fulfill it, her white sneakers squeaking across the floor.

“I’m glad you came,” Roxy said, propping her elbows on the table. “I was worried I was going to have to search you down and force you to come eat with us.”

I laughed again. “I’m pretty sure you’d have a hard time doing that.”

“I’m scrappy.” Roxy grinned. “I could take you.”

Thinking of the shiner I’d first seen her with, I decided she was probably telling the truth. “I’m glad you guys invited me.” I paused while the waitress returned with our drinks before disappearing again, then I said, “So, I know Roxy works at the bar, what about you, Katie?”

“At the club across the street from Mona’s.” Katie dumped a packet of sugar into her coffee and then picked up five more, managing to rip the tops off in one impressive swipe. “It’s a strip club.”

“Oh.” How had I not noticed a strip club across the street from Mona’s?

Katie dumped the sugar in her coffee. “I strip. I don’t dance. I take my clothes off for a living and get paid damn good money for it, too.”

I blinked. “That’s cool.”

Her gaze turned shrewd. “You don’t have a problem with that?”

“Um, not if you don’t.” I glanced at Roxy, who was busy cleaning her glasses, a small smile pulling at her face. I picked up my soda and took a deep drink.

Katie tilted her head to the side, studying me. “Really?”

I lifted a shoulder. “Nope. Honestly. I think it’s pretty cool you have the lady balls to do it.”

A slow grin appeared. “You should do it. You’d make so much money. Hell, I’d pay to see you—”

“Katie,” sighed Roxy, resting her chin in her hand. “Stop trying to recruit rookie strippers. You do this every time you meet someone. No one has agreed yet.”

I grinned as I pictured the odd blonde roaming the city, looking for women who wanted to take their clothes off. “I don’t think I could do it. I’d get up there and then forget how to take my clothes off.”

“Taking your clothes off is the easiest part,” Katie replied seriously.

Roxy looked doubtful. “Those spandex running pants leave very little to the imagination. If I had your body, I’d walk around naked all day.”

“I have no problem getting naked when it’s—I don’t know, an intimate situation,” I announced, “but doing it in public is a different story.”

“That’s good to know,” the waitress said, pen in hand. “Do you guys know what you want to eat?”

“Awkward,” I murmured under my breath as my eyes widened.

And don’t miss the previous titles in the Wait for You Series!

Weekly Wrap-Up September 12th-18th

This week turned out to be very hectic(also Adventure Time is ruling my life), so I only got three books read. Two physical books; one a graphic novel and the other an ARC. Which means one e-book borrowed from my library.

One by Sarah Crossan ****
I should have already reviewed this. But life got in the way. So a review won't go up until I'm back from my trip; in about two(ish) weeks.

Saga Vol 5 by Brian K. Vaughan ****
The best graphic novel series most definitely. Although this volume was not as good as the previous four, I still really enjoyed it. I think this one was the lull before the storm. But now the series is on hiatus so I don't know how long I'll be waiting for volume six.

Dumplin' by Julie Murphy ****
So this was one really hyped up book before its release this week. And although I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was no blown away. I could definitely relate with Willowdean. Weight, insecurity and body issues are all something that we all feel. Some more than others. But I loved how body positive this book was. Willowdean was pretty secure in her body. But still showed how insecurities, especially when you start dating, can arise. All issues were dealt with in a really realistic and relatable way. My few issues were Willowdean's decision making at times(I know she's a teenager, but still). I didn't like how she handled or didn't handle Mitch and his feelings. It was kind of not wrapped up well. I also would have liked a bit more from the ending. I can see why that was a good place to end it. I didn't hate it. I just wanted more. But overall a fun, body positive read.

Top 5 Wednesday: Mental Health

Top 5 Wednesday is a meme started by Lainey at Ginger Reads Lainey. Find the list of all the #T5WFamily here.

This weeks topic is: Top 5 books that deal with mental health/illness.

I think that last year or so has really shown how far the publishing industry is advancing. We're seeing more and more diverse books, especially in YA. And the includes books the deal with very real and very tough subjects like mental health. I have found myself looking for those books as I want to get a better understanding and become more knowledgeable. I feel very ignorant when it comes to mental health as it has never touched my life in any way. So as they say, knowledge is power and what better way than through books. Even fictionalized books. Because I know a lot of these authors are writing a story based on their personal life.

5. All Bright Places

What I think All the Bright Places shows is just how scared we, as a society, are about recognizing the signs of someone needing help. There's a stigma surrounding anything to do with mental health and illness and All the Bright Places demonstrates that with parents who just don't want to have a "sick" son. So we best put it off as his quirkiness. It's really sad. But this book is brilliant.

4. The Last Time We Say Goodbye

The Last Time We Say Goodbye hits its readers right where it counts. I think Hand did a superb job of realistically portraying Lex's struggles with her brothers suicide. As well as the effects of Tyler's(Lex's brothers) depression and possibly misdiagnosed mental illness.

3. I'll Meet You There/Come Back to Me/This is One Moment

All three books deal with PTSD. Which I know has always been in our history but is only something that is more recently being taken seriously. As it should. In all three books PTSD is shown through veterans. I can't even being to imagine how to cope and overcome what the three fellas say well over seas. These books are emotional, truthful and fantastic reads.

2. Carry the Ocean

You guys, I get another chance to mention(push) this wonderful book. Like I've said and will keep saying Carry the Ocean is such a positive book. Although it has a character learning to live with depression and anxiety and another with autism, there was every change for this book to be heart breaking. And it really wasn't. There plenty of emotional pages. But in the end it warmed my heart.

1. Challenger Deep

I can't imagine a fiction book getting more personal then Challenger DeepShusterman provided a very real look at mental illness through Caden. I took something away from Challenger Deep. Learned something powerful. Caden was a great voice to help me empathize and realize just how encompassing the mind can be, even when we know somethings off.  I was able to see how someone like, Caden starts to spiral downward. How his mind is blurring the lines between reality and make believe. This is a hard book to read, but very powerful and one that should be read. Challenger Deep is very unique and vivid in the narrative. Very clever. It is also one I recommend constantly. It is a book that should be read.

Any books you would recommend me on mental health?

Happy reading!
